Place de l’etoile reopens; Restaurants are interested again in this area.
After years of closure, Nejmeh Square (or as called by the French Place de L’etoile) in Downtown Beirut reopens. A step towards reviving the heart of Beirut city and bringing back tourists to this vibrant part of downtown.
A bit of history:
Nejmeh Square is the main square in Beirut Downtown; If you see it from above, it looks like a star with six roads radiating from the center. In 1933, Lebanese-Brazilian businessman Michel Abed gifted the new city center the iconic clock tower. Facing the clock tower is Lebanon’s Parliament building; the two historic churches, a series of insurance company headquarters such as the famous Generali Building with the lion statue on top of it and multitudes of restaurants, offices and cafes
Throughout the Lebanese Civil War, the Place de l’étoile was a battlefield around which the war would revolve for 15 years. Following the war, it was renovated by Solidere and re-opened to the public for the first time in 2003.
Post its reopening, the Nejmeh Square was full of restaurants scattering in the alleys around the clock tower. Tourists were everywhere; it was indeed a much-needed space for pedestrians in the heart of the city.
Unfortunately, the restaurants in this part of the city closed bit after bit since 2015 – following the closure of the area through barricades due to security reasons and following a complicated political situation that would last for many years to follow;
Reopening on Nejmeh square in 2025:
Today in 2025, following the election of a new president and a new government, the Nejmeh square is finally reopening and the public is gaining access again to this beautiful part of the city.
“We believe that the square will be full with restaurants and shops again”, says Samar Hassan – the General Manager of JSK Real Estate. The head office of JSK Real Estate lies indeed on this beautiful square; she continues: “We are starting to see a lot of restaurants interested in this part of the city; we have high hopes that soon life will go back to a beloved part of the city center”.
If you have an F & amp;B business and you are interested in renting on place de l’etoile, one company to call would be JSK Real Estate.
